Today I wanted to write about why I think your look in a professional sphere is important. I also (and maybe more importantly) simply adore beauty products. And I like to share when I find some that I think are really, really universally great. So that we can all bask in the glorious-ness of each other. Because yeah, yeah — we’re all naturally beautiful. But damn I love a great highlighter.
To begin, here’s why I think your look at the office is important. There are multiple reasons.
- You’re around the people you work and collaborate with every day. People who will (whether they mean to or not) make assumptions and judgements about you. And while I don’t think piling on the makeup or somehow not looking like yourself is the answer to making a good impression, I do think always looking polished and refined is an important first step. When someone subconsciously notices that you put effort into how you appear to others day in and day out, that resonates. We all have off days. But it speaks volumes about your perseverance and work ethic when you feel like ‘I want to be nowhere near other humans today’, but you get your damn self ready anyways. That’s someone I want to work with.
- It somehow feels really, really good when you dress or apply makeup for something else — not office related. Like going out to dinner, or to the bar with the girls. Seeing the true difference between your day look and night look is fun. It just is. It reminds you that you’re multi-faceted and hot. Because you are!
- Routine. Readying yourself for the day is usually the first step you take in the morning. If you just hop out of bed, throw on some clothes, brush your teeth and head to the office, you’re not doing yourself justice, and in turn, your work could suffer. I think “getting ready” physically, mentally prepares you for everything on your to-do list.
- Confidence. When you look good, you feel good. It is written in the stars.
All of the above are certainly not reasons – like I said earlier – to somehow wear makeup, do your hair, or whatever else in a way that is not you. Or doesn’t make you feel like you. You know you better than anyone else. But give your body and face and appearance the care and love it deserves. Whether that’s just an extra face mask one week, or a new nude lipstick. Elevate yourself however you see fit, beautiful. You actually deserve it! I swear.
Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Brown(Out), Stone(Fox), or O(Vert).
This is the creamiest eyeliner. It goes on smoothly, doesn’t smudge, and the color really lasts until you decide it needs to come off. For work, I love all three of the above mentioned colors. The Brown(Out) is really simple and perfect for every day. The Stone(Fox) is a sleek silver/gray that makes lighter-colored eyes pop. And O(Vert) is a dark green that isn’t too much for daytime, and is also a bit of fun color if you’re not into browns/grays. I don’t think black eyeliner is ever appropriate for the office. It’s too fun to surprise yourself with how sexy your eyes looked rimmed in black when you’re going out!
My mama turned me on to this fantastic mascara. I wear this every day. It really lengthens my lashes and gives them this glossy black look.
You’ll notice I didn’t include an eyeshadow in my tips for a great office look. That’s because I think we so often go overboard on the eyeshadow. And also — who has time to do a full eye in the morning before work? Save it for the special occassion. If (like me sometimes) you feel naked without anything on your eyelids, I like to dust some of my favorite highlighter — Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal or Moonstone — over my lids.
Concealer Stick: Cle de Peau concealer.
I can not say enough about Cle de Peau’s concealer. It is…there is just nothing like it. I have never been more obsessed with a beauty product the way I am with this concealer. I have tried so many concealer sticks, foundations, etc. and none have been exceptional the way this one is. For under eyes, blemishes — literally anything. This covers it with a creamy, flawless stroke. I swear it actually heals half the issues my skin gifts me with. I use the beige color and even when I have a tan in summer or I’m paler in winter, it always works.
I know this is a great product because this is the 3rd time I’ve purchased it. It’s creamy, a dot will take you all the way, and the SPF protection can’t be beat. In the summer, you’re crazy not to have this on every time you leave the house. Wrinkles, girls — start avoiding them yesterday!
This iridescent light pinky-purple is my go-to daytime blush. It’s light, with a bit of shimmer and just a natural pop of color. With blush at work, I often go towards one that you can never accidentally put too much on. This is one of those.
The office is not the place to contour. So with bronzer, just dust it on like you did in 2004 before all this psychotic sculpting began. I really like Makeup Forever’s Pro Bronze Fusion Bronzer in Natural Matte Honey for the office. Makeup Forever is also the brand that all makeup artist’s use, but that peasants like us won’t destroy our faces with. Fantastically long lasting.
Bite Beauty Multistick in Cerise, Gelato or Mascarpone. Bite is affordable, really moisturizing and understated. All perfect for adding a little extra something in the office — but not being the girl with a too-bright color that everyone can’t help but staring at.
This perfume is magical. It truly smells better as the day goes on. I read about it in some magazine years ago and was really enamored by the way the woman described it. So I bought it, and it has been my favorite perfume ever since. No one has it. It’s an enigma. Try it. It’s fresh, clean and light with a barely-there undertone of sensual. To keep those in the office guessing 😉
Nails should look clean, fresh and most importantly: done. The colors above are my favorite shades for the office. I find that rings always sparkle a little more with some great nail polish.
This stuff guys…oh my god, it smells so good. Heavenly. I know it has other benefits but I really use it purely as a hair perfume.
I will never use another brush ever again. This thing gets out the worst, most tear-inducing knots painlessly. I use it on my hair when it’s both wet and dry. It’s a miracle brush. If there’s anything you buy in this whole post, make it this $8 brush. I don’t understand its magical ways, and I don’t need to.
If there are any products you wouldn’t go into the office without, comment them below! And have a fun, laugh-filled weekend.
